Microinverter
A microinverter is a compact inverter installed under each solar panel that converts its direct current to alternating current independently. Unlike a string inverter, shade or a fault on one panel does not affect the output of the others, and it lets you monitor every panel separately.
What a microinverter is
Instead of one box converting the energy from all panels, each panel gets its own small inverter. The roof becomes a set of independent generators. If one panel is in shade, gets dirty or fails, only that panel produces less. The rest keep running at full output.
Monitoring changes too: the app shows production per panel, so a fault is spotted the same day instead of being discovered months later on the bill.
Why it matters in Florida
Florida roofs are rarely a clean rectangle facing south. They have slopes in several directions, chimneys, vents and the neighbor’s palm trees. With a string inverter, each of those obstacles punishes the whole row. With microinverters, the system makes the most of complex roofs and mixed orientations without losing as much.
The cost is somewhat higher and there is more electronics on the roof exposed to heat. In exchange, microinverter warranties are usually longer than a string’s, and replacing one does not shut down the whole system.
Common mistake
Paying for microinverters on a roof that does not need them. If your roof has one large, well-oriented, unshaded slope, a quality string inverter performs almost the same for less money.
