R-value

R-value is the measure of a material's thermal resistance: how much it slows the flow of heat. Higher R-value means better insulation. It adds up with thickness, so a thicker layer of insulation has more R. In Florida, attic insulation is the main barrier between the sun-baked roof and the air conditioner.

What R-value is

Heat always flows from where there is more to where there is less. In summer, from the hot roof toward the cool house. Insulation slows that flow, and R-value says by how much. Each material has an R per inch of thickness (fiberglass, cellulose and foam have different values), and a layer’s total R is that value multiplied by the inches installed.

R-value measures conduction: heat passing through the material. It does not measure air sneaking through gaps or radiant heat beaming down from the roof deck. That is why insulation is combined with air sealing and, in Florida, with a radiant barrier.

Why it matters in Florida

A Florida attic in summer is an oven. That heat comes down through the ceiling and the air conditioner fights it for hours. Many homes built decades ago have insulation that is thin, compressed or pushed aside, with a real R-value far below what current codes recommend for this climate zone.

Raising attic R is among the upgrades with the best cost-to-result ratio, and it also changes the Manual J: a better-insulated house needs fewer tons of AC. That is why the right order is insulate first, size the equipment after.

Common mistake

Adding insulation over leaky ducts or over unsealed gaps. R-value does not fix air coming through holes, and burying ducts in insulation makes them harder to repair later. It is also a mistake to spray foam on the roof deck without evaluating attic ventilation. A diagnosis before buying material saves you both. More in what R-value means for insulation.
