Water purification options in Florida: softener, carbon, reverse osmosis or whole-house
What each system removes and what it does not, which one solves scale, chlorine or a specific contaminant, a comparison table, and when you need none according to your water report.

There is no such thing as “the water filter”: there are four technologies that solve four different problems, and the most expensive mistake in Florida is buying the one that does not match your problem. A softener removes scale (hardness), activated carbon removes chlorine and taste, reverse osmosis removes dissolved contaminants at the point where you drink, and “whole-house” is a combination that only makes sense when your water report justifies it. Before looking at equipment, read your CCR report: the real problem is there.
What does each system do?
Softener (ion exchange). A resin swaps calcium and magnesium (hardness) for sodium or potassium, and regenerates with salt. NSF describes exactly that mechanism. It solves scale on faucets, heater and appliances, soap that will not lather, dry skin. It does not disinfect, does not remove chlorine, does not remove nitrate or lead.
Activated carbon (granular or block). Carbon traps chlorine, chloramine (with catalytic carbon), organic compounds, pesticides and sulfur odor; it improves taste and smell. NSF certifies it under standard 42 (aesthetic effects) and, for certain health contaminants such as lead or PFAS, under 53 if the model proves it. It does not remove hardness, iron, bacteria, nitrate or dissolved solids.
Reverse osmosis (RO). Pushes water under pressure through a semipermeable membrane. University of Nebraska Extension describes it that way and adds that it removes a wide range of dissolved contaminants: arsenic, nitrate, lead, chromium, perchlorate; the EPA lists it alongside carbon as a certifiable technology for PFAS (NSF/ANSI 58). But it also removes minerals, produces reject water and delivers low flow: that is why it goes under the sink, not on the whole house.
Whole-house system (point of entry). Sediment filter + carbon (+ softener, + oxidation for iron or sulfur on wells) at the home’s water entry. Treats all the water, including shower and heater. It rarely includes reverse osmosis, for flow and waste reasons.

What do most Florida homes need?
If your CCR shows no violations and your complaints are scale, soap that will not lather and chlorine taste, what the report describes is very hard water (above 180 mg/L in most of the state on the USGS scale) with disinfectant within the limit. The matching solution is a softener plus carbon at the entry, and, if you want drinking water free of minerals and anything dissolved, reverse osmosis under the kitchen sink. Nothing more.
Heads up: door-to-door sales of “whole-house purification systems” in Florida lean on a drop test that changes color with hardness and on the word “chemicals.” Hardness is not a health risk per the EPA; it is scale. A multi-thousand-dollar system sold with 10-year financing to fix scale and taste is, almost always, a softener and a carbon filter with an enormous margin on top. You are right to distrust that. Ask for the CCR, ask for NSF certification by contaminant, and ask for the equipment price separate from the financing.
What if I have a well?
Everything changes, because nobody has tested your water. First the certified lab test (bacteria, nitrate, hardness, iron, sulfur, and whatever the county recommends). Then the system, which on Florida wells usually needs: sediment, oxidation for iron and sulfur, softener, carbon, and disinfection (UV or chlorination) if bacteria are present. Reverse osmosis in the kitchen if nitrate or arsenic show up. Without a test, any quote is an expensive guess.
When you do NOT need any system
- Your CCR shows no violations, scale is light and the taste does not bother you: buy nothing.
- Only the chlorine taste bothers you: a pitcher or faucet filter certified NSF/ANSI 42 solves it for very little.
- You will replace the water heater soon and scale is your only complaint: evaluate the softener together with the new heater, not before.
- You rent or are moving: the system does not travel easily; point of use and done.
What to check before you decide
- Your CCR (or your well test): hardness in mg/L, disinfectant, violations, lead/copper. That is the problem to solve; write it in one line.
- The specific model’s NSF/ANSI certification for the contaminant you care about (44, 42, 53, 58), on the label or in the NSF database.
- Operating cost: softener salt, carbon cartridges, RO membrane and prefilters, and the reject water.
- Equipment price separate from financing, and a local service warranty.
- Where the softener and RO drains go, and whether your current water heater already has scale shortening its life (the DOE puts a tank at 10-15 years). Always start with Florida tap water.
