Home solar batteries in Florida in 2026: what they do, what they cost, and when you don't need one

How a solar battery works, the difference between kWh and kW, what one costs installed, and why with 1-to-1 net metering in Florida it is for backup, not savings.

A solar battery stores the electricity your panels produce so you can use it at night or when the power goes out. In Florida, where FPL, Duke and TECO credit you 1 to 1 for every kWh you send to the grid, a battery does not save you money: it gives you backup. It costs $13,000 to $16,000 installed for 13.5 kWh, and it is worth it only if an outage costs you more than that.

How does a battery work in a grid-tied home?

During the day, your panels produce more than you use. Without a battery, that surplus goes to the grid and your utility credits it through net metering. With a battery, the surplus is stored at home first; once the battery is full, the rest keeps flowing to the grid.

At night, without a battery, you draw from the grid and spend the credit. With a battery, you use what you stored first and only then touch the grid.

There is a third moment, and it is the one that matters in Florida: the outage. A grid-tied solar system shuts off when the grid drops, to protect the crews repairing the lines (the U.S. Department of Energy explains this in its resilience guide). kWh and kW: the two numbers to read in any proposal

A kWh measures how much energy fits in the battery. A kW measures how much power it can deliver at one instant. Think of a water tank: kWh are the gallons it holds; kW is the width of the tap.

The two numbers combine differently depending on what you want. A refrigerator uses about 4 kWh a day but draws 300 to 800 W while running (EnergySage data): low power, long duration. A 3-ton central A/C draws about 2,400 W running and burns 19.2 kWh in 8 hours: high power, and it empties the tank fast. A battery with many kWh and few kW keeps the fridge going for days but will not start the A/C. One with many kW and few kWh starts the A/C and is drained by evening.

What does a solar battery cost installed in 2026?

Per EnergySage, a 13.5 kWh battery averages $15,647 installed before incentives; the Tesla Powerwall 3, the most-quoted battery on its platform, averages $13,473 installed. Price per kWh varies by state: EnergySage reports state averages between $563 and $1,586 per kWh.

Two caveats in the same section. First, those are national averages from a quoting platform, not the price at your specific home: your electrical panel, the distance to the garage and the county permit all move the number. Second, the 30% federal credit for buyers (Section 25D) does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025, per the IRS. If someone offers you a “battery with 30% off from the government” as a 2026 purchase, confirm with your tax preparer before signing.

Heads up: the industry sells the battery as “savings.” In Florida, with 1-to-1 net metering, the grid already stores your surplus without charging you for it. What a battery does do in Florida

  • Keeps the circuits you choose running when the power goes out, as long as the system has the isolation equipment and was designed for it.
  • Recharges from the sun the next day, which a generator cannot do. The full comparison is in battery vs generator.
  • If your utility puts you on a time-of-use rate, it can shift usage from expensive hours to cheap ones. That is a minority case in Florida and we run the numbers in that guide.

What it does not do

  • It does not push your bill below the utility’s minimum charge. That charge is paid with or without a battery.
  • It does not run the whole house indefinitely. One 13.5 kWh unit feeding a 2,400 W central A/C lasts about 5 hours with no sun; the rest of the house shortens that.
  • It does not last forever. Typical warranties cover 10 to 15 years with a guaranteed minimum capacity at the end; details in how long solar batteries last.

When it is NOT worth it

  • When your goal is a lower bill and you have 1-to-1 net metering. The money goes further in properly sized panels.
  • When the solar system does not exist yet: production is designed first from your 12 bills; the battery is decided afterwards, with the load list in hand.
  • When the installer cannot tell you which circuits stay on and for how many hours. If the answer is “the whole house,” ask for the calculations.
  • When you plan to move soon: a battery is a 10-year-plus investment and there is no solid data showing it is recovered at resale.

What to check before you decide

  • The list of critical loads you want to keep (fridge, wifi, lights, one room with A/C) and the hours of autonomy you need without sun.
  • The battery’s continuous and peak power against the start-up of your big equipment, especially the A/C compressor.
  • The total installed cost, including the isolation equipment and any electrical panel changes, not just the battery price.
  • The warranty: years, cycles and the percentage of capacity guaranteed at the end.
  • Whether the price assumes a “federal credit” that no longer exists for purchases in 2026.
