How long do solar batteries last? Cycles, warranties and why Florida heat matters (2026)

A solar battery lasts what its warranty says and then some: Tesla guarantees 70% of capacity at 10 years; Enphase, more than 60% at 15 years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first. It does not switch off one day: it loses capacity gradually, faster with heat, deep cycles and the passage of time. In Florida, where you install it matters as much as which one you buy.
What is a cycle and how many does a battery make in its life?
A battery cycle is one full charge followed by one full discharge. Two half discharges count as one cycle. In a home with panels, the typical pattern is one cycle a day: it fills with the midday sun and empties overnight.
One cycle a day is 365 a year: 3,650 in 10 years and 5,475 in 15. That is the number to read the warranties against. Enphase covers the IQ Battery 5P up to 6,000 cycles or 15 years, whichever comes first: at one cycle a day, the years arrive before the cycles do. Tesla, for solar self-consumption or backup use, covers unlimited cycles for 10 years; for other uses, it caps at 37.8 MWh of total energy delivered.
With a battery that only waits for the outage, cycles are few and what wears it is the calendar. With one that works every day, cycles add up, but current warranties are already sized for that.
What does each manufacturer guarantee?
A battery warranty has three numbers: years, cycles (or total energy), and percentage of capacity at the end. All three matter; the third is the one most often left out of proposals.

Read it this way: a 13.5 kWh Powerwall 3 can deliver about 9.5 kWh in year 10 and still be within warranty; a 5.0 kWh IQ Battery 5P can be down to 3 kWh in year 15 and still be within warranty. If your critical-load list needs the full 13.5 kWh, you are sizing for day one, not year eight.
Two conditions the fine print does impose: Tesla requires a reliable internet connection to keep the full warranty, per its datasheet; Enphase conditions coverage on the product being installed by an authorized installer and activated. Ask about both before you sign.
Heads up: “25-year warranty” is what you hear for panels. For the battery it is 10 or 15. If a proposal blends both numbers into one sentence, separate which is which. The battery is the component you are most likely to replace before the panels stop producing.
What degrades a battery?
Per NREL, the U.S. Department of Energy’s renewable energy laboratory, a lithium battery’s life depends on the temperature it is kept at, the average state of charge, the depth and frequency of cycling, and calendar aging, which happens even when the battery sits idle.
In Florida the first one is yours to deal with. Enphase specifies 0 to 30 °C (32 to 86 °F) as the optimal operating range for the IQ Battery 5P and notes that full charging performance occurs between 15 and 45 °C; it recommends a non-habitable indoor space such as a garage, or outdoors away from direct sun. Tesla specifies operation from −20 to 50 °C and notes that performance may be de-rated above 40 °C (104 °F). A closed garage in August or a west-facing exterior wall can cross those thresholds. It is not that the battery fails; it is that it runs hotter than ideal, every day, for years.
The other factors are handled by software: modern systems limit depth of discharge and manage state of charge on their own. What you control is where you put it.
LFP vs NMC: the chemistry underneath
The two lithium chemistries competing in home batteries are LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt). Per EnergySage’s comparison, LFP batteries tend to last more cycles, produce less heat, and often do not need the same level of ventilation or cooling as NMC; in exchange, they have lower energy density, meaning they take more space per kWh. NMC wins on density and production cost.
For a Florida garage, that heat difference is not theoretical. Both the Tesla Powerwall 3 and the Enphase IQ Battery 5P and 10C use LFP, per their datasheets and EnergySage’s review. When it is NOT worth it
- When the proposal sizes backup on day-one capacity and your need is fixed: by year 10 you will be short up to 30%.
- When the only available spot is a closed exterior room with no shade or ventilation: you will pay for the full warranty on a battery working outside its optimal range.
- When the installer is not manufacturer-authorized: the warranty may not apply even if the equipment is genuine.
- When you buy today planning to “replace it cheap in 10 years”: there is no way to know the 2036 price, and the plan has to close at today’s price.
What to check before you decide
- The three warranty numbers: years, cycles or total energy, and percentage of capacity at the end.
- Whether your critical-load list fits the capacity of the last warranty year, not the first.
- The chemistry (LFP or NMC) and the optimal temperature range on the datasheet.
- The physical installation spot: shade, ventilation and summer temperature. We tie it to backup design in hurricane and outage backup.
