5 things raising your electric bill in Florida (and none of them is missing panels)
Pool pump, old A/C, water heater, leaky ducts and phantom loads: how much each weighs with sources from FPL, DOE and ENERGY STAR, and what to check before buying anything.

Five things explain most of a high bill in Florida, and none of them is fixed with solar panels: an old air conditioner, the pool pump, the water heater, leaky ducts and the phantom load of “off” devices. With sources from FPL, the DOE and ENERGY STAR, here is how much each weighs and what to check before buying anything. Solar produces energy; these five waste it. The right order is reduce first.
1. The old air conditioner
It is the elephant: per FPL, in most Florida homes air conditioning is about 50% or more of the annual bill. And the DOE calculates that replacing a unit only 10 years old with a new, efficient one can save 20% to 40% of cooling costs. Before that, the cheap fix: the DOE notes that simply cleaning or replacing filters lowers the A/C’s energy use by 5% to 15%.

2. The pool pump
In Florida almost nobody looks at it, and ENERGY STAR estimates a pool pump can cost up to $310 a year in electricity. Two facts from the same source change the game: cutting pump speed in half makes it use just one-eighth of the energy (the pump affinity law), and running the filter 6 hours a day instead of 24 reduces its energy use by 75%.
What to check: how many hours the timer runs (many homes sit at 8-12 hours by habit, not need), and whether the pump is single-speed or variable. A variable-speed pump programmed at low speed for more hours usually filters the same on a fraction of the kWh.
3. The water heater
Water heating is about 18% of a home’s energy use per the DOE: the second expense after heating and cooling. In Florida nearly all heaters are electric resistance, the least efficient technology. A heat pump water heater uses 70% less energy than a standard electric one per ENERGY STAR, and Florida is its ideal climate.
What to check: tank age (the DOE puts its life at 10-15 years), scale from hard water, thermostat temperature. Guide in heat pump water heater.
4. Leaky ducts
The DOE estimates a typical house loses 20% to 30% of the air moving through its ducts to leaks, holes and poor connections. In Florida ducts run through the attic, above 120°F: the escaping air cools the attic and the air that arrives comes out reheated. It is the cheapest repair of the five with the most impact.
What to check: rooms that never cool, constant dust, peeling tape in the attic. Ask for a leakage test with a number before and after. Guide in leaky ducts.
5. Phantom loads
TVs on standby, chargers, game consoles, coffee makers with clocks, the second refrigerator in the garage. The DOE’s Better Buildings program cites government analyses putting standby power at up to 12% of residential electricity, and an average U.S. household wastes more than 1,300 kWh a year in standby. Not first on the list, but the only one you can fix today without spending.
What to check: how many devices have a light on at 3 a.m. Switched power strips, and the old garage refrigerator taken out of service.

All percentages are ranges published by the sources, not promises for your house. The real number comes from an energy audit.
Heads up: none of these five appears in a solar quote, and that is no accident. Every kWh you waste justifies one more panel. When someone sizes your system on your 12 bills without asking about the pool pump or the year of the A/C, they are designing on top of waste, and you will then pay for that big system for 20 years. You are right to distrust that. Reduce first, produce second.
When attacking the five does NOT make sense
- If your bill is already low (the utility’s minimum charge plus little usage): payback on any job is slow.
- If you will sell the house within two years: only the cheap fixes (filters, timer, power strips).
- If the roof is about to expire: in Florida the roof comes first, before any new equipment or panels.
What to check before you decide
- Your 12 bills in kWh: the difference between July and January is mostly A/C and pool. If you are not sure how to read them, start with what a kWh is.
- Pool timer hours and pump type.
- Year of the A/C and the water heater; date of the last filter.
- A duct leakage test with a number.
- With that done and measured, then yes: how many panels I need.
