Old air conditioner, high bill: why solar alone will not be enough (Florida 2026)
If your A/C is 12 years old or more, it is probably half your bill. What it wastes, what happens if you add panels without replacing it, and how to decide the order.

If your air conditioner is 12 years old or more, it is almost certainly half your bill and at the end of its useful life. Putting solar panels on top of that unit works, but it forces you to buy more panels than you would need, to feed waste. That is why, when there is an old A/C, solar alone is not enough: reduce consumption first, then produce.
How much of your bill is the air conditioner?
In most Florida homes, about 50% or more of the annual electric bill, according to FPL itself. In summer the share climbs because the unit runs almost nonstop. In other words, any inefficiency in the A/C is multiplied by half of what you pay.
Compare it with the rest of the house. Water heating is around 18% of home energy use per the DOE; lighting and appliances split the rest. No other appliance comes close.
What does an old unit waste compared with a new one?
Per the DOE, replacing a unit that is only 10 years old with a new, efficient one can save 20% to 40% of cooling costs. A 15-year-old unit starts from an even lower SEER, and it loses efficiency with age: dirty coils, low refrigerant, worn capacitors.

An example using the figures above, not promises: if cooling is 50% of a bill and the new unit cuts that cooling by 30%, the total bill drops about 15%. With a solar system sized on the old usage, that 15% would have been paid for in extra panels.
Heads up: the solar industry has an incentive not to look at your A/C. High usage justifies a big system and a bigger commission. When someone quotes panels without asking what year your A/C is, they are not designing for your house: they are designing for their sale. You are right to distrust that.
Why does the order matter so much with solar?
A solar system is sized on your last 12 months of usage. If that usage includes an A/C that wastes, the system comes out big. Then, when you replace the unit, you overproduce. In Florida, the annual surplus with FPL, Duke or TECO is settled at the generation rate, which is lower than the full rate you pay (net metering). The extra panels return less than they cost.
The order we recommend and apply in the diagnosis is the one in the 3 pillars: first what consumes (A/C, insulation, hot water), then what produces (solar). That way the solar system comes out the right size and the Minimum Bill Guarantee is calculated on real usage, not inflated usage.
Does the unit always need replacing?
No. Three things can make an “old” A/C look worse than it is:
- Leaky ducts. The DOE estimates a typical house loses 20% to 30% of the air moving through its ducts. A good unit with broken ducts cools the attic, not the house. See leaky ducts.
- No maintenance. Simply cleaning or replacing filters can lower the A/C’s energy use by 5% to 15% per the DOE. See the maintenance checklist.
- Wrong size. An oversized unit starts and stops, does not dehumidify and uses more. Replacing it with another of the same size solves nothing. See right-sizing.
When replacing does NOT make sense yet
- The unit is under 10 years old and a real consumption reading shows it performs close to expected.
- You have not done a duct test or checked the insulation: you could spend on a new unit and keep the same bill.
- Your budget covers only one thing and the attic is uninsulated: in Florida that fix is usually cheaper and pays off on any unit.
- You plan to sell the house within two years: the unit’s payback will not arrive in time, though a new A/C does help the sale.
What to check before you decide
- Manufacture year on the outdoor unit’s plate and the model number (to look up the original SEER).
- Your 12 bills: how much kWh usage rises from April to September versus December-February. That difference is largely the A/C.
- A duct leakage test and a photo of the attic insulation.
- Quotes that include a Manual J load calculation and SEER2, not just “a 3-ton.”
- If you already have a solar quote: ask them to redo it with the projected usage after the A/C replacement. If they refuse, you know who they were designing for.
