The 3 consumption pillars: A/C, insulation and hot water before solar
Heating, cooling and water heating add up to about 70% of a home's energy (EIA, DOE). Why those three pillars get fixed first, and why solar is production and comes after.

Three things govern a home’s bill: the air conditioner, the insulation that decides how hard that A/C works, and the water heater. Per the EIA, heating and air conditioning were 52% of a U.S. household’s energy use in 2020, and the DOE puts water heating at about 18%: together, close to 70% of the home’s energy. Those are the three pillars. Solar is not a pillar: it is production, and it gets sized after fixing the three, not before. That order is the difference between a right-sized system and one that pays for waste for 20 years.
Where does the 70% come from?
From two federal sources and one local one:

In Florida the split tilts even further toward the A/C: there is no heating to offset it, and FPL puts air conditioning alone at half or more of the bill. In other words, pillar 1 weighs more here than the national average.
Pillar 1: the air conditioner
It is what consumes. The DOE calculates that replacing a unit only 10 years old can save 20-40% of cooling costs, and the lifespan it cites is 12-15 years. But before replacing: right size (Manual J), maintenance and ducts. A new unit of the wrong size or on broken ducts repeats the problem with a new label. Guides: SEER, old A/C and your bill.
Pillar 2: insulation (and ducts)
It decides how hard pillar 1 works. It consumes nothing on its own; that is why the industry ignores it and why it pays so well. The EPA estimates that air sealing and insulating attic and floors saves an average of 15% on heating and cooling; the DOE estimates a typical house’s ducts lose 20-30% of the air. In Florida, with the attic above 120°F and the ducts inside it, this pillar is the one most often broken. Guides: R-value, attic insulation, leaky ducts.
Pillar 3: hot water
The home’s second-largest energy use per the DOE, and in Florida almost always on the worst technology (electric resistance). A heat pump water heater is 2-3 times more efficient per the DOE, and this climate is ideal for it. Guides: heat pump water heater, tank vs tankless.
Why does solar come after?
Because solar does not reduce consumption: it covers it. A system is sized on your last 12 months of kWh. If those kWh include a 15-year-old A/C, an uninsulated attic and a resistance heater, the system comes out big. And big means:
- More panels to pay for over 20-25 years, whether cash, loan, lease or subscription.
- Poorly paid surplus once you fix the house later: in Florida, the annual excess with FPL, Duke and TECO is settled at the generation rate, lower than the full rate (net metering).
- A fuller roof for the same result, with more penetrations and more removal-and-reinstall cost the day you replace the roof.
With the three pillars fixed, usage drops, the system comes out smaller, and real savings per dollar invested go up. That is the order we apply in the diagnosis: first what consumes, then what produces. And on that corrected usage we design at ~110% and calculate the Minimum Bill Guarantee.
Heads up: the solar industry lives on your kWh. The more you consume, the bigger the system and the bigger the commission. That is why almost no quote asks about the A/C’s year, the insulation depth or the water heater type. It is not malice: it is incentive. We have access to the whole market and do not depend on selling you panels, so we can tell you when the right answer is “not yet.” You are right to distrust anyone who never says that.
When the pillars are NOT the problem
- A/C under 8 years old and right-sized, attic at the recommended R measured, and an efficient heater: your pillars are fine and solar is the next step. It happens, and when it does we say so.
- An already low bill: payback on any job is slow; start with the cheap fixes.
- A roof about to expire: in Florida the roof comes before any pillar and any panel.
What to check before you decide
- Year and size of the air conditioner; date of the last service.
- Real attic insulation depth (measured, with a photo) and a duct leakage test with a number.
- Type and age of the water heater.
- Your 12 bills in kWh, to see how much summer usage rises over winter: that difference is pillar 1.
- An energy audit that orders the three pillars for your house. With that done, how many panels I need has an honest answer.
